Despite yesterday’s rain, the river Seine looked clean and calm this morning.  Little boat traffic was moving and the Conciergerie towers were reflected sharply, as if in a still moat.  In winter the river is often a dirty grey, thick with silt, but just now it’s so clear that you can see shoals of small fish darting through the stems of the water weed.

There’s a chill in the air and autumn colours among the green leaves of the trees.  The beach – Paris Plage – has been swept away and cars are running along the riverside expressway again but the left bank quayside was peaceful this morning and there’s still warmth in the sunshine. The summer’s not over yet.
