The splashing of the fountain masks the noise from the nearby building site.  An island of brightness in a pool of dappled tree shade, the water cascading down the stone staircases sparkles in the sun.  Ripples on the surface cast moving shadows on the smooth floor of the fountain basin, overlaying the leaf shadows of the surrounding trees.  It’s an ever changing picture, relaxing and mesmerizing in it’s restlessness.

The Fontaine des Innocents is an impressive monument with a long and interesting history.  In May I studied the fountain as an earnest tourist, looked up its history and wrote an informative post.  Today I enjoyed the play of light on the water as I lingered in the square with my camera. The few people in the Place des Innocents this morning were sitting quietly, gazing at the sunlit water.  It’s a calm place with a still centre despite, or because of, the constant movement of the water.  A place to pause and reflect.
