Leaf light and dappled shadows; bird song and wind in the trees; a hideaway with a woodland view.  The ‘tree house’, (built for our two daughters by their dad), isn’t a house in a tree.  It stands on tall legs, next to a slender, young oak.  The ‘woodland’ amounts to six trees at the bottom of a suburban garden.  But, on a small scale, the tree house is a place apart.  A place of adventure for a gaggle of small children with a picnic or (if no one’s watching) a place of quiet retreat for one grown up with a book or a camera.

The children who used to camp in the tree house have grown up and moved away.  The little wooden structure is mostly home to spiders and woodlice now, but it’s still a happy place.
