A cup of coffee, a glass of wine have become symbols of resistance.  Away from the major tourist spots, the corner cafés and brasseries of every Paris arrondissement are both the spice and the cement of community life.  For the price of a coffee or a glass of wine you can linger as long as you like, chatting, reading, working or watching the world go by.  This is the everyday face of civilization, French style, the ordinary expression of living side by side in the city.

Here are two café views in the 3rd arrondissement, early this evening.  Life goes on.
