Another mural from the Climat au Pied du Mur project. This one, by Doudou Style, brings a note of hope into a bleak vision of future deserts. To my too literal mind, representing the oceans by cracked desert confuses the message but it’s a striking image nonetheless. The artist’s statement, posted alongside the mural, explains that the child is planting seeds of fruit trees. ‘Like her, everyone can get engaged against climate change.’
Just round the corner, in Place Stalingrad, a row of giant pinwheels lead the way to an outdoor exhibition on the Paris of the Future. It’s interesting stuff about developing technologies and practical plans, engaging the head rather than the heart.
The pinwheels aren’t a serious, emerging technology but they caught my eye and made me smile. Building and growing a sustainable future, in Paris as elsewhere, means political commitment, technological development and practical change but also imagination, inspiration and celebration. Engaging the energy of optimistic children will help too.
