There was a time when mild winter days and out of season flowers were an uncomplicated pleasure. (‘Lovely weather for the time of year’). Now conversations on the bus or in the greengrocer’s start with ‘this weather’s not right’. A late rose or early primrose is cause for concern, not delight.
Unease that the seasons are no longer reliable makes real winter flowers all the more welcome. This winter jasmine always flowers between December and March; that’s what it does and I’m glad to see it.
