The newly opened hellebore flowers face down towards the ground, well protected from rain and wind. The backs of the petals are all plain white or pink but the freckled patterns on the inside of the petals are different for every plant. To appreciate the variety of the flowers you have to gently lift each flower in turn, or get down low to the ground.
In the mild, wet weather fresh green shoots are pushing up through the mulch of dead leaves under the trees. The plain, dark leaves of seedling hellebores contrast with the feathery, aromatic foliage of sweet cicely and white-veined arum leaves, glistening in the rain.
