Sad cats by Canal St Martin. A photo on Underground Paris, taken in December 2014, shows these cats by Chanoir partying happily. Now it looks as though the sorrows of 2015 weighed heavily on them.
This grinning cat gets around a bit. Sometimes signed ‘M. Chat’ (or Mr Cat), the yellow character created by Thoma Vuille appears on walls and chimney stacks around Paris and as far afield as Sarajevo, New York and Tangier. He even has his own Facebook page.
In 2014 the artist was taken to court by RATP, the Paris public transport authority, over the cats that appeared on newly plastered walls (awaiting retiling) in Chatelet metro station. His refusal to pay an 1,800 € fine was supported by an internet petition and the mayor of the 13th arrondissement. The case was quietly dropped on the basis of a legal technicality.
