If I hadn’t been looking up at the trees (as I do), I wouldn’t have noticed the familiar, winged figure of M. Chat, high up on the chimney stack in rue du Faubourg du Temple. When the trees are in leaf the cat must be quite invisible from the street. (If you stand the other side of the trees he’s hidden behind the roof of the adjacent building).
The unexpected views and ‘here one minute gone the next’ glimpses are, of course, part of the appeal of this sort of street art. M.Chat doesn’t have great artistic merit or a thought-provoking message but he makes you look up, pay attention and smile. That’s quite an achievement in a busy Paris street on a cold, grey winter’s day.
