Sharing a very small island is easier when the water which surrounds it is your natural habitat. The pair of mallards dozing in the sun on a nest of twigs look a picture of domestic contentment.  In reality male mallards are far from devoted partners or parents.  The coot is alert and on watch, guarding the island or maybe just watching for a likely snack.




This small heap of rocks in not far from the shore in Lac Daumesnil, an artificial lake in the Bois de Vincennes.  It is developing something of the character of a miniature island with a small ash tree rooted among the rocks.  Broken off once, the sapling is sending up a thicket of healthy new shoots from the base.
