The twigs, buds and open flowers of the cherry plum offer a simple harmony against the stone wall. Dark grey against light grey, deep pink opening into a paler shade.

The opening leaves introduce new colour, a gentle copper brown blending easily in the same, soft chords.

The dark, blue green ivy adds a stronger contrast (maybe a new musical theme) more sober, solid and enduring but still harmonious.

The cherry plum or myrobalan, flowering along the wall of Montparnasse cemetery, is the species form of Prunus cerasifera.  There’s also a common purple-leaved form which, to my taste, lacks the interest of gentle contrast between the flowers and foliage.
