As I opened the window to water the pots of herbs, grey clouds were gathering fast.
The low sun, breaking through the clouds, highlighted the iron scrolls of the guard rail and cast sharp shadows on the terracotta floor tiles. Sunlight filtering through a white curtain prompted memories of warm summer afternoons, far from the chilly reality of this March morning.
As cloud covered the sky, chimney stacks on a distant building stood out clearly against the darkening grey. Someone has recently painted the lower half of each chimney a brilliant white. Who and why? There must be a story there.
Looking left brings a chimney ladder centre stage. The ideal setting for a rooftop drama with the hero (or villain) clinging precariously to the narrow, metal rungs in a gathering storm, before dropping to the parapet below and disappearing behind the slope of an adjoining roof.
Looking right offers a glimpse into a hidden courtyard, sheltering many different lives. These buildings aren’t giving many clues away.
Looking up, muted tones of stucco, zinc and terracotta make an abstract composition against marbled grey cloud.
Six views from the same window, each telling a different story. Take your pick.
