Although I know a spider in the bath has simply fallen in and become trapped, my first thought on seeing this one was ‘how did it get out of the plug hole?’  Old myths die hard.  At around 7cm (or two and a half inches) this harmless Giant House Spider (Eratigena atria) is only average sized.  Males of the species can grow up to 10cm or 4″.  First thing in the morning 7cm seems quite big enough.

Beyond the Window Box doesn’t often venture indoors – it is after all a blog about green places and urban spaces – but when the garden wildlife choses to move into the house…
