Piecemeal development over the centuries has made many Paris streets into patchwork histories of doors, windows and shopfronts. When I’m posting photos of interesting old doors I tend to crop out intrusive neighbours, along with the wheely bins, parked cars and roadworks. The result may be a more harmonious picture but the contrasts of the living city tell a more interesting story.

Here is a selection of old Parisian doors accompanied by their next door neighbours.
