Heading south from Paris the fast railway line cuts straight through open farmland, screened in cuttings or behind concrete walls whenever it passes a village.    East from Lyon the route to Turin heads towards the mountains and window gazing becomes more interesting.   Close to the track villages, farm buildings and sleepy stations flash past as momentary glimpses while in the distance the mountains close in along the valley.

This route runs through a series of short tunnels, threading through a succession of rocky valleys with fast flowing rivers.  You’ll have to imagine those as the views were to close or too brief for me to capture.  As the train ran on into a flat bottomed valley and the mountains receded to a distant backdrop, the light faded towards evening and the eastern sky warmed with a soft, reflected glow.  Too little light for clear photos from a moving train but the impressionistic images tell their own story.
