Green shoots emerge, expand, unfold or uncurl as different plants open their new spring leaves. Here’s a sample of contrasting botanical styles, seen in the Parc Floral on Friday.
Arum leaves emerge in miniature and gradually expand in size
Shuttlecock ferns uncurl from a simple spiral…
but these coiled fern fronds are a bit more complicated
New hornbeam leaves are fan pleated either side of the midrib
Prickly gunnera shoots, well protected against leaf eating pests, push through the straw that has protected them over winter
And new horse chestnut leaves hang limply, waiting to be pumped up with sap
