Brightly coloured banners, red predominant among them, make their autumn appearance on the Paris streets. Parisians take their summer holidays seriously and that means saving protest marches and demonstrations until after la rentrée. Today tens of thousands of people were on the streets to protest against proposed reforms to labour laws.
Apart from the inevitable skirmishes between a small group of black clad agitators and the riot police, the mood of the protest was relaxed and peaceful even when the march ground to a halt because of trouble up ahead.
Seasoned protestors know that demonstrations involve a lot of waiting.
