Where the horizon is hidden by tall buildings the subtle changes of light at dawn and dusk are easy to overlook.  Only a spectacular sunset or sunrise demands attention in the city.

 

By the sea (or in open country where your gaze can run to the horizon) the sky makes up half the view.  Each time I go home to Spittal I’m struck again by the ever changing light of the wide open sky.  I suppose I’ll start to take it for granted when I’m there all the time.

 

Spittal beach faces east, a perfect spot for sunrise watching.

 

Catching a winter sunrise doesn’t demand early rising.

 

Sunsets are reflected in high clouds…

 

or the windows of quayside houses across the river mouth in Berwick.

 

And finally, looking inland from the old bridge is a good place for a sunset view.
