Spring seems to approach hesitantly, two steps forward then one step back.  Two weeks ago I was sowing seeds of annual flowers in Spittal but tomorrow heavy snow is forecast there. Meanwhile I’m in Paris where the horse chestnut trees are just starting to burst into leaf.  Most of the other street trees are still winter bare but the sap is rising and the buds are swelling.  At this in-between season a single early-flowering cherry or almond tree catches the eye and transforms a city view.

Although I grew up in a Christian tradition the Easter story of necessary sacrifice and salvation leaves me cold.  For me the joy of Easter is something more simply human, a celebration of new life after a barren winter, of hope and new beginnings growing out of despair.  Spring may arrive hesitantly but arrive it does.  The sap is rising.  Happy Easter!
