The train left Paris on a misty grey morning. It arrived in Marseille under the midday sun.
It could have been the other way round; there are sunny mornings in Paris and dark clouds in Marseille but even under an overcast sky the colours of Marseille spell south.
The pink of local limestone and toasted browns of terracotta roof tiles are reflected in the soft, warm tones of rendered walls. Doors and shutters painted in brilliant Mediterranean blues fade to gentle reminders of past sunshine.
