Soaring arches draw the eye upwards; a circle holds your gaze like an eye in the stone.
Rose windows were a masterpiece of cooperation between stone masons and glaziers in many medieval churches and cathedrals…
including the chapel at the Chateau de Vincennes in Paris…
Reims cathedral…
and Florence cathedral.
Even a plain round window catches your gaze. The circular windows of the sacristy at the Barcelona’s Basilica de la Sagrada Familia suggest simplicity but the triangular vaults of the chapel are an intricate structures of interlocking shapes.
A collection of circles in stone inspired by Debbie Smyth’s Circle challenge.

Thank you Pete. They’d been waiting for their moment in the limelight for some time!

Great architecture – the people who built it were real artists! Wonderful pictures!

I love a circle to frame an image. They’re just made for photography, aren’t they?

Those circles are all beautiful – but that first building, that’s something else!

Thanks for your comment. The first picture is from the sacristy of the Basilica della Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. It seems beautifully simple in comparison with the extraordinary main building of the basilica. If you’re not familiar with the Sagrada Familia you might like to follow the Stone and Light link at the bottom of the circles post.

Thanks. I’ve never been to Barcelona (alas!) but my sister has and she shared wonderful photos as well.
