Bunting and hanging flower baskets tempt visitors from the High Street to explore the shops and cafés at the top of West Street.

Starting from Bridge Street it’s a steep climb up the cobbled hill but it’s a street worth exploring. Like much of the old part of Berwick the street has medieval origins and eighteenth century buildings, modified and adapted up to the present day.

Looking back there’s a glimpse of the river and the town quay, from where  horses and carts, porters and handbarrows will once have toiled up the hill towards the market place.  Like so many of the back streets and alleyways of Berwick West Street is quiet now, a place for a peaceful stroll with echoes of history.
