Summer is officially over, children are back in school, the Left Bank is filling up with students and all the bakers’ shops are open again.  In France, where people take their summer vacations seriously, la rentrée (or the return) extends to business, political life and sport as well as schools and colleges. For the first two days of the week the sky in Paris was somberly grey and heavily overcast but today the sun broke through briefly and the prospect of autumn looked much more appealing.
