As the people of Paris watch in horror and terrible images of the cathedral in flames are beamed around the world, so many people must be revisiting their treasured memories of this beautiful place. Here are a few of mine, posted in sadness and solidarity.

The fire at Notre Dame is hard to comprehend. Paris has lost part of its soul. President Macron has vowed to rebuild the building, but it will never really be the same. Thanks for the photo album.

At least most of the stonework was saved but that will be small comfort to the people of Paris this morning.

Dreadful news. And it’s hard to believe, but I’ve never visited, and now I never shall. I hardly know Paris at all, except through your blog.

I went in to the cathedral on three or four occasions but it is its daily presence on the skyline, the soaring spire and the extraordinary details of the exterior stonework that will stay with me.

Yes, I loved the detail in a couple of your photos. I keep on wondering what I would be feeling if it had been Chartres……

It will be a slow and difficult task but yes, I’m sure Notre Dame will rise from the ashes.

A professor at Vassar College, unfortunately now deceased, created a digital map of the intact cathedral that may help in the rebuilding. More about his work in this asrticle:
