The lower petals (or falls) of the Iris sibirica flower offer bold temptation to passing pollinators.

 

 

The plain, upper petals advertise the flower from a distance but when the insect gets close…

 

 

it’s the dramatic markings of the falls that lead upwards, over the lip and down into the depths.

 

 

Paler varieties have more subtle markings but there’s no doubt which way leads to  the nectar.
