As in so many communities up and down Britain, the gardeners of Spittal are preparing for the annual visit of the In Bloom judges – in this case Northumbria in Bloom.

Many of the colourful beds along Spittal’s Main Street are planted and maintained by volunteers from the village Gardening Group, who also look after the flower borders of two small local parks.  Some householders adopt the street bed nearest their front door while others decorate their home with hanging baskets, window boxes or doorstep pots.  Every bed, border or basket is different, showing the gardener’s individuality.  All together add up to a place that is clearly cared for and a source of local pride, whatever the judges’ verdict.
