The line of the footpath runs straight from one corner of the Berwick ramparts to the next, leading the eye past benches and trees towards the horizon. The Lens-Artists Challenge 80 is Leading Lines which Tina Schell describes in this way:
‘Leading lines carry our eye through a photograph. They help to tell a story, to place emphasis, and to draw a connection between objects. They create a visual journey from one part of an image to another and can be helpful for creating depth as well’.
Looking through my photo collection for images with leading lines was an eye-opening exercise. I found plenty of pictures with strong lines leading nowhere in particular. I also found some more satisfying images where the lines contribute to a sense of depth, journey or connection as Tina suggests. Here’s a selection.
