The shadow lines of ridges and furrows converge towards the horizon, leading your eye into the distance.  In a photo, converging lines demand a focal point, drawing attention to any prominent feature near the vanishing point of the lines.

 

These two photos were taken on a day of soft light and drifting clouds.

 

On Spittal beach the strong lines of prominent rock strata lead towards to the horizon.

 

One side of Berwick pier is surfaced with smooth concrete, the other side is rough stone blocks.  The dividing line between rough and smooth runs the length of the pier.
