The crashing breakers sound loud and close but a strong north wind is driving along the shore and, in the lea of Berwick Pier, the waves seem to struggle to reach the beach.
The air is hazy with low cloud and sea spray. On the brine-soaked timber of the old groins, the rusted bolts stand out like eyes against the beaks of giant birds emerging from the sand.
