In the chilly, grey haze of an east coast mist, August’s yellow daisies are welcome spots of sunny colour.  The Rudbeckias are just coming into flower.

So are the Vanilla Ice sunflowers.  This short, sturdy, multi-headed variety copes well with wind and rain. It’s more custard than ice cream in colour, though.

The pale yellow marigolds (from the Art Shades mixture of Calendula) have been flowering since May. If they’re dead-headed regularly they will keep on flowering to the end of the year, carrying a memory of summer on into the dark days of winter.
