The Keswick Codlin apples aren’t quite ripe yet but the fruit are so crowded on the branches that they’re starting to push each other off.
Pretty as a picture – Katy or Katya is a sweet, Swedish dessert apple introduced in 1947
The Golden Pippin fruit are small with russet freckles – this old English multi-purpose apple is mentioned in a gardening manual dating from 1629
Laxton’s Fortune – introduced in the early 20th Century – is crisp and flavourful straight from the tree but it bruises easily and doesn’t keep.
Several of the early apple varieties will be ready to harvest soon but I’m enjoying the sight of their laden branches for a few more days first.
