If a privet hedge is providing long, straight shoots it’s probably out of hand. We only have one, large privet bush now so it’s safe to let it grow a bit. When we moved in there were two monster bushes taking up a substantial corner of the garden – appreciated by roosting sparrows and our neighbour who cut foliage for her church flower arrangements. We had to keep one bush!
Privet definitely makes a good hedge but it grows too fast. We inherited a long, tall hedge in our York garden and were continually struggling to keep it under control.

How clever! We used to live in a house with a privet hedge. I never thought of commandeering a few shoots for the flower vase.

It used to be much derided, and it’s not my favourite. But it has its uses.
