Water is at the heart of The Alnwick Garden. The Grand Cascade is the first feature to catch your eye as you walk through the main entrance.
Impressive but peaceful as the water flows down a vast, staircase of stone pools….
Noisily dramatic under the arcing spray of dozens of interlocking fountain jets….
and appealingly unpredictable.
Just off to one side of the lower cascade pool, snaking yew hedges hide the Serpent Garden.

Water drips, slides, cascades and swirls in a series of intriguing water sculptures, hidden in hedged enclosures. There are discrete plaques explaining the scientific principles behind the different effects but mostly this is a place for exploration and play.

We loved our visit to The Alnwick Garden, 2011 I think. We often talk about it. Fabulous to see your photos, what date were these taken?

Thanks for your comment, Liz. I’m glad the post brought back good memories for you. The photos were taken yesterday. Although we live only 30 miles from Alnwick now, I’d not been to the garden for more than ten years and decided it was time for an outing!

Beautiful photos of a gorgeous place. Right at the moment on this side of the pond we’re having either too little water (California and the West Coast) or too much (New Orleans and the rest of the East Coast including the Philadelphia metro area). It’s good to be reminded that water can be a force for good and beauty.
We’re fine, by the way, but the stories from the Southern U.S. and even the Philadelphia suburbs are heartbreaking.

Thanks, Bob. It’s good to hear from you. I was reading the US news after writing this post last night – a stark reminder of our dependence on water in moderate quantities!

Marvellous images of a place we’ve yet to visit. Note to self: organise this!
