The autumn colours of maple leaves and rowan berries glow in the soft light of a cloudy day.

 

The branches of the Japanese maples are furred with soft green moss….

 

while every twig of the many different rowans is hung with beards of grey-green lichen. Coincidence, adaptation or symbiosis?

A few of the huge variety of different trees to be seen at Dawyck Botanic Garden.  The maples are all varieties of Acer palmatum.  The rowans are all species in the Sorbus aucuparia group.
