I sometimes feel I’ve taken far too many photos of Spittal beach but then the receding waves leave a new pattern of sand ripples…
or the morning light catches reflections in low-tide pools and the view is renewed again.
My selection of favourite images from 2021 reflects another year spent mostly close to home. The Royal Border Bridge is a subject I’ve revisited time and time again, but there’s not often a swan posed conveniently in the foreground.
After a mild start to the year, winter arrived in earnest in February. For one bitterly cold day the sun shone brightly from a clear, blue sky onto crisp, frozen snow. Then the cloud returned.
At 55.46° N the summer daylight lingers late into the evening – perfect for a low tide stroll.
Summer stretched into autumn this year with some beautiful, blue sky mornings in September.
There wasn’t much blue sky to be seen on our late October holiday on the Isle of Arran but sun breaking through the brooding clouds made for dramatic views.
An early November visit to Dawyck Botanic Garden was well timed for autumn colour.
And finally, Christmas at the Botanics where imaginative lighting highlighted the beauty of winter trees, resting and waiting for spring. Happy New Year!

I always love your beach photos and you’ve included some stunners in this collection. The snow and the autumn leaves are beautiful too 🙂

Hi Judy,
Lovely selection of photos. I particularly love the sand ripples and the one of woods. I do so enjoy your photos – thank you for sharing them so generously.
Hope all is well with you and Martin. Matt who is currently living with us has Covid, so Chris and I are doing everything we can to stay safe and keeping our fingers crossed….
