A lot of important open spaces in the city don’t fall in the category of Parks and Gardens. Many Paris Places are green places, thanks to their trees, even though most of the surface is paved. There’s plenty of room for confusion in translation between French and English. Place often translates to Square, but the English word ‘square’ was adopted in nineteenth century France for the fenced, urban, public gardens that were modeled on London squares.
