Sun warms the brown heather, drawing mist from morning frost. Down below in the shade of the hillside, frost lingers and fields look like frozen lakes. The flat, open moorland of the North York Moors hides deep, secluded valleys. Looking along Newtondale on a bright but hazy winter day, bands of larch brown, bracken bronze and dark conifer green stretch as far as the eye can see with pools of bright grass green around the isolated farms. The bare twigs of birch trees add a touch of smoky purple to the landscape and a steam train leaves a snake of cloud as it winds along the valley bottom.
