Less than an hour from Paris on a suburban train can take you to the heart of a vast forest with a true sense of wildness.

The Forêt de Fontainebleau to the south east of Paris is the most famous but the extensive forests to the west of the city in the valley of Chevreuse are also in easy reach for a day trip.

Fontainebleau also offers formal avenues and crisp topiary in the park around the chateau.  At Parc de Sceaux the chateau grounds are now a vast public park with grand vistas and wonderful trees.  Of course if you’re looking for grandeur there’s always Versailles.
