Although autumn is a season of decay there’s lots of new growth in the forest too. Fallen acorns are starting to split open and put down roots. The new root tips show as bright points of red among the dry brown leaves.
These newly sprouted orange mushrooms look temptingly like chanterelles but I think they are the inedible False Chanterelle. Not one to try unless you really know what you’re doing!
Golden cherry leaves contrast with brown, dry oak leaves.
Another unidentified fungus.
A fungus growing in strong colonies on old tree stumps. It looks like Honey Fungus or one of its near relatives.
Looking closely at just a few of the fungi growing on fallen trees reveals the depth of my ignorance. Fascinating but I’ve no idea what it is!
Trees are easier to identify. These acorns from a sessile oak (Quercus petraea) are just starting to put out roots.
A regular reader has told me of problems with viewing galleries on Beyond the Window Box. If you click on any of these small photos (though not the main one) a gallery slide show should open, displaying each photo in turn on a black background. Does this work for you? Any comments gratefully received.

Yes, it works for me as always, the gallery opens, and your images soothe me. 🙂

Thanks Chris. The system seems to work for most people. I’m glad you’re still enjoying the blog.
