Feeding or resting, a comma butterfly is a convincing imitation of a tatty, autumn leaf…
unless the light happens to be behind its delicate wings.
Soaking up the sun, the symmetrical beauty of the butterfly’s marking is revealed, as well as its surprisingly hairy body with an unusual touch of green.

Beautiful… So delicate… And I like the touch of green! Almost moth-like?

I spent a pleasant, lazy hour in the park following butterflies and then dragonflies by the lake. The dragonflies didn’t sit still long enough for any successful photos!

Nice pictures. Do you know about the big butterfly count? It is a citizen science project run by Butterfly Conversation – sit and count species and numbers of butterflies you see in fifteen minutes, then send through the results. There is an app to make it even easier.

Thanks for your comment. No, I didn’t know about the big butterfly count. Now I’ve found out about it I would have joined in but I’m not back in Britain until this year’s count has finished. I was watching butterflies yesterday in the Paris Parc Floral and thinking I would have seen more butterflies on an equivalent day in my old York garden. No shortage of nectar in the park so I guess it’s a shortage of larval habitats.
