There’s no longer a bell in the small tower on the roof of the old Spittal parish school, but the structure is still crowned with a stone cross. Becky B’s photo challenge sent me searching through my archives for more roofs ‘with a cherry on top’. Here’s a selection.
St Boisil’s church is crowned by a salmon weather vane – Tweedmouth – December 2018
A chapel bell tower with a ball on top – Cromarty – May 2019
A handful of arrows on a complicated weather vane – Le Louvre – Paris – October 2018
I think there are twelve weather vanes on the cathedral crown – Newcastle – March 2019
A bell tower with clock and a cross on top; a dome with cupola and a knob on top – Genoa – October 2018
The town hall weather vane is nearly out of the picture – Berwick – November 2018
A fairytale tower tops an eye-catching primary school – Cromarty – May 2019
Elegant simplicity – Riomaggiore – October 2018

I think the weather vanes have been re-gilded or polished recently.

I haven’t been there for about 30 years.

The cathedral must be much the same but you’d see plenty of other changes in the city.
