Dwarfed by the grand scale of the dome above it, an ordinary door sits at the head of a steep flight of stairs. The door for a quick, emergency exit maybe?
Or maybe not. This doorway, high up on the Pantheon, isn’t an easy way out.
I took these photos late yesterday evening in the soft light of a summer evening. The clear sky and pink sunset glow hinted at a fine day ahead but there were dark clouds gathering on the horizon. This morning the overcast sky suits my mood. A narrow majority of British voters have turned the country towards the EU exit but the way out isn’t going to be as quick and simple as they may have hoped.
A post for Thursday Doors.

I loved the Pantheon, aged 21, first time in Paris. I remember the names, Victor Hugo, Emile Zola, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. There was so much past in there. And I guess all of Europe has been cast in the past today too. Where are these people who voted to leave? I didn’t hear anybody say that’s what they would vote for. Now that I mention it – I HAVE heard some Americans say who they would vote for. Just to remind myself not to be as surprised after.

I don’t personally know anybody who voted to leave (and couldn’t let myself believe this might happen) but that is maybe another symptom of divided Britain. My friends and family are generally outward looking people, interested in the world around them and (by and large) committed to ideals of international cooperation and understanding. To some Britons, struggling with no hope jobs and insecure housing in economically depressed areas, people like us are part of the problem.

Right… so it’s about this division. Like in the US, and everywhere else really. And since I hang, also virtually, only around people who share my basic beliefs, I’m always so surprised when the “others” happen. “People like us are part of the problem” is the scariest thought of today. And so true.

One of the pleasures of blogging is finding links with like-minded people in unlikely places but I guess that can give a false sense of common understanding. Still, it’s good to hear from you!
