In summer the tall, horse chestnut trees in the centre of Place des Vosges merged in a solid mass of green. Now the bare branches stand out against the winter sky and the distinctive character of each individual tree is revealed.
The neatly clipped lime trees in the allées round the square do have individuality, if you look closely, but their role is to form part of a larger whole, an element of living geometry.
